Cleveland at the Crossroads, The NCP looks at Browns vs. Falcons....

Final feelings on the Texans loss:

K-Dubs, the Soldier- Despite their unimpressive record, I figured the Texans would give the Browns a tough game.  I did not foresee the beating they were going to administer in a 23-7 win, though.  The Texans’ front seven, led by J.J. Watt, bottled-up the running game, holding the Browns to 58 yards on 24 carries, and registered 8 tackles for losses.  They also harassed Hoyer all afternoon, tallying 2 sacks, laying him out an additional 4 times, and pressuring him into a 20 for 50 performance.  Hoyer looked baaaaddd even when he had time, missing some targets by a country mile.  His inconsistency is consistently becoming more of an issue.  His receivers also had a couple of untimely drops, which did not help things.  Fortunately, not every defense has Watt and Brian Cushing, but unfortunately that includes the Browns, who allowed 213 rushing yards to a team missing its starting running back.  The defense just could not off the field, as Houston had 8 more minutes in time of possession and converted on 7 of 18 third-down opportunities.  This game was a big letdown after the curb-stomping administered to the Bengals the week before, but I am still forgiving of team that has far exceeded my expectations this season.  Even with the loss, the Browns sit at 6-4 and Josh Gordon, their most dangerous offensive weapon, makes his return this week.

Big$- I ended last week’s entry by saying I was gonna kick back and enjoy being 6 and 3. Oddly enough, the beat down the Browns suffered in game 10 does not diminish the enjoyment I received from the 1st 9 games of the season. This team has out-performed my expectations and they have done so without the aid of two pro bowlers on offense (Mack and Cameron) and a rash of injuries on D. With that said, I believe they are at a crossroads. This week is going to go a long way in showing who the Browns are and where they are going. Are they legit playoff contenders or are they also-rans that caught a few breaks this year? Due to the week to week nature of the NFL, I don't think the Texans game does a whole lot to help figure that question out. Remember when Mark Sanchez was about to embark on a Hall-of-Fame-level career revival, and Andy Dalton was banished to the Arena league? That was only 2 weeks ago. Take it back a little farther and recall when we all assumed the Seahawks would be 17-0 and the Patriots run was done. Overreactions run rampant in NFL discussions and I’m not going to fall prey to over reacting to the game last week.

Where are you starting LeBron this week?

K-Dubs, the Soldier- I would like LeBron to suit up at linebacker this week in the place of Karlos Dansby, who is listed as doubtful after leaving last week’s game with a knee injury.  Craig Robertson has shown a lot of improvement since last year, and NCP favorite has Chris Kirksey played well, but they do not yet have the veteran leadership needed to captain the defense.  Dansby does, and so does LeBron.

Big$- I want Lebron and the other 9 guys in the Cavs current rotation to play on kickoff coverage with the hopes that it will knock a little sense and life into their lackluster early season.

What’s your prediction for this week’s game on the road against the 4-6 Falcons:

Big$- On one hand I’m seriously concerned about the Browns ability to contain the strong-armed Matt Ryan, as Ryan Mallet went All-Pro on the defense last week. The good news is, his main weapon (and former Browns draft board asterisk) Julio Jones is a bit nicked up. On the other hand, I feel that the return of Josh Gordon is going to open up the offense. I suspect Ole Flash G. is a grip it and rip it type of guy who won’t be hampered by rust in any way and he’ll be the spark that leads to a Browns 31 -17 victory.

K-Dubs, the Soldier- The big news this week is the return of Gordon from his 10-game suspension resulting from drug-policy violations.  Gordon dominated the NFL last year with Brandon Weeden throwing him the ball.  Regardless if he catches a single ball this week, he makes the offense more potent.  His mere presence outside the hash marks should keep opposing defenses from stacking the box, which should help open up running lanes for Isaiah Crowell and Terrence West.  Getting him back at the No. 1 receiver position allows leading receiver Andrew Hawkins to match up against opponent’s second-tier cornerbacks or against linebackers and safeties when lining up in the slot.  In looking at this week’s game, I had counted this one as a loss when I scanned the scheduled at the beginning of the season.  Atlanta seemed like a playoff contender on paper, and this is an out-of-conference roadie, which results in a win for the home team more often than not.  Now, however, the Falcons are 4-6, and the only wins are against the poor divisional competition.  Matt Ryan is moving the ball, ranking 5th in the league in passing yards per game and throwing 17 touchdowns, and he has only thrown one interception in the last four games, but the defense cannot stop anyone.  They rank last in total defense and have lost to the Giants, Vikings, and Bears—not exactly Murders’ Row.  Similarly, the Browns defense have made rookies and second-team QBs, running backs and receivers look like All-Stars all year.  And that was with leading tackler Dansby and fellow starting linebacker Jabaal Sheard, who may not play this week because of injury.  With two porous defenses matching up against offenses with some dangerous toys, I am expecting a shoot-out with the Browns holding on late for a 33-27 win.

Baver's Picks and Colin's College Football Questions 11/21/14

1) Give us an update on your picks to date and what games and lines you find interesting this week?

24-15-1 against the spread, including 7-2-1 on the OSU games.  My three best plays for Wk 13: (1) the Bucks laying the 34 ½ against hapless Indiana.  I had the Buckeyes winning 49-10 in the Buckeye Bag, but now trying to figure how the Hoosier D holds OSU under 50 pts.    Adjusted score prediction: Ohio State 56 Indiana 13.  (2) I have had a good handle on Florida State as of late, both on them and against them.  I like Boston College getting the 17.  I think the Noles will again slip back into complacent mode.  (3) I usually warn against knee jerk reactions, but I like Minnesota getting 10 against Nebraska.  The Huskers are not as bad as they played last week, but 10 points is just too many points in this one.

2) What’s with the Noah Spence?  Are there any legs to the reinstatement rumor?

Supposedly, Spence has an appeal hearing with the Big Ten on November 25th (next Tuesday).  At that point Spence will have (basically) served a 12-game suspension (the Orange Bowl plus the first 11 games this season).  Let’s keep our fingers crossed.  Not sure how much Spence could help right away….depends what kind of game shape he is in; he has not practiced with the team this fall.  But he could certainly help in the bowl game(s).  In fact, that would be a huge addition to this team.

3) How embarrassed should Buckeye fans be by the nastiness displayed on twitter towards Jalin Marshall after his fumbles last week?

You know what?  You wanna be an idiot in a bar with friends, and rip into individual players?  Fine… been there, done that.  But posting trash on Marshall’s twitter?  Here’s one: @JalinMarshall Everyone hates u just go away!!!  Here’s another one: @JalinMarshall pls pls pls kill urself.  The guys that posted this crap are disgraceful.

4) Our run defense is looking a little suspect.  In fact, if not for safety Vonn Bell making some key stops, the numbers could be much worse. How concerned should we be with Tevin Coleman this Saturday and Melvin Gordon possibly looming in the title game?

I am not that concerned about Coleman, as Indiana can’t beat Ohio State.  But I am very concerned about Gordon, as Wisconsin is certainly capable of beating Ohio State.  Let’s hope we see some progress with the rush D this week as they try to contain Coleman.  Holding Gordon in check is going to be a bitch, if the Badgers get to the B1G title game.

5) J.T. Barrett is re-writing the record book in his first season as a starter. How good is this guy?  Which stat of his do you find most impressive?

I am still somewhat in disbelief that Barrett is this good, this soon.  Running third in the Heisman race right now?  What if I told you that was going to be the case…and told you this the day after the Va Tech game?  Crazy.  As great as his stats are, I guess it’s his demeanor that has amazed me most.  Coming into 2014, I think you could make a decent case for any one of these QB’s being the best ever at Ohio State: Kern, Schlichter, Germaine, T. Smith, Pryor or Braxton.  If Barrett stays four years, and stays healthy, there will be little debate when his career at Ohio State is over – Barrett will be the best QB we’ve ever had here.

6) I know it's not Hate week yet, but I ask, have you ever seen the Dead Schembechlers before and what was that like?

Seen them three times – they bring it.  The 2006 show at the Newport prior to the (undefeated vs undefeated) OSU – Michigan game was incredible.  By all means, check them out on November 28th at Ace of Cups, north of campus.  Well worth your while.  Bo Biafra is a natural comedian and the Dead Schembechler’s will get your juices flowing.

Jeff Hassler may not approve of their language but I can tell you that I have seen these guys live a number of times and there is no place on Earth better to be the night before the OSU v Michigan game. In fact, if you consider yourself a Buckeye Football fan and haven't seen the Dead Schembechlers play, then you really aren't a very big Buckeye football fan.

Be warned, the show isn't for the faint of heart and unless you want your kid's ears ringing w F- Bombs and hair matted with Wolverine blood, this is a 21 and up show. Ace of Cups Friday November 28th. Doors 6pm, show at 8pm sharp.  Tickets WILL SELLOUT IN ADVANCE so I wouldn't waste time messing around. @baverbuckeyebag

Baver’s Buckeye Bag 11/19/14

Baver’s Buckeye Bag 11/19/14

Gopher game thoughts, moving forward, and misc…

--Fans need to get lay off Jalin Marshall.  The kid made some mistakes, but it’s NOT time to sh*tcan him as the punt return and the idiots that degraded him on Twitter are just that - idiots.  Absolutely embarrassing (….the Twitter idiots, not Marshall).  Marshall will bounce back and his future at Ohio State looks as bright as ever.

--The Minny game wasn’t too surprising.  I guess the only thing that surprised me was the Buckeye rush defense.  David Cobb is a very good back, but 145 yards & 3 TD’s at 5.4 yards a pop?  Shouldn’t have happened.  The Buckeyes defense is going to have to play better or they will not beat a playoff team, should they get there.  But the 7-point margin of victory?  Not the end of the world.  The Bucks beat the Gophers more soundly than the score indicated, and the weather conditions certainly did not favor Ohio State.

-- Joey Bosa.  What can you say that hasn’t been said already?  How many plays did Bosa disrupt that you didn’t even see in the stats?

--Is there anything not to love about JT Barrett?

--Things could obviously change (as stranger things have happened) but it’s looking like the Bucks and Badgers in the B1G title game.  My biggest fear is a worn down OSU defensive line having to face Melvin Gordon and Wisconsin’s O-line.  That will be the Bucks 8th straight game since their last bye week, and it’s been the starting four D-linemen going most of the way every game.  I am not sure why the backup DT’s have not emerged to contribute more.  The lack of depth at DE has been well documented, though.  The Bucks have played against two very good TB’s the last two weeks that combined for 282 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per carry between them.  And Wisconsin’s power running game is an upgrade over the last two rushing attacks the Bucks have faced.

-- If Ohio State beats a 10-2 Badger team to go 12-1, that will carry some weight with the playoff committee.  Wisconsin has pulled things together nicely and a victory by the Bucks over the Badgers would look far better than TCU’s (likely) victory over Iowa State that same day.  And TCU’s game at Texas will not be easy.  With the Bucks passing Baylor in this week’s committee poll, it tells me that a 13-1 Buckeye team will not have to worry about Baylor being ahead of them.  Of course there are many other games that factor in as well, so things could play out many different ways.  But it looks like the Bucks are in the playoff “if” they win out.

--The Game is a week and a half away.  Am I overlooking Indiana?  Yes, and rightfully so.  As far as The Game, we’ve seen the Buckeyes lose as a 17-point favorite, and the spread should be around 17 for this one.  One last chance for Brady Hoke.  Last year, Michigan took a lot out of Ohio State prior to the Big Ten title game, and you can argue that UM should have won the game.  Probably won’t be the same story this year, but as I said above, stranger things have certainly happened.

Hoosier Daddy – The Michigan tune-up

How did Indiana beat Missouri at Missouri?  Not that the Tigers are all that, but this is a very bad Indiana football team.  Purdue, power ranking wise, is probably a touchdown better than Indiana.  That should tell you most of what you need to know about Indiana.  What looked like a program on the rise under Kevin Wilson looks worse than bad right now.  They are winless in the Big Ten (0-6) losing by an average of 23 points per game.

The one bright spot for the Hoosiers has been tailback Tevin Coleman, who has rushed for 1,678 yards & 12 TD’s, while averaging 7.8 yards per carry.  Hard to reconcile how good Coleman has been with how bad Indiana has been overall.  As far as the top B1G defenses Coleman has faced, he was held to 71 yards and 3.5 ypc against Penn State, but ran for 132 yards and 8.8 ypc against Michigan State.  The Buckeye defense has done a poor job at stopping the run lately and containing Coleman looks like one the only individual challenges Ohio State will have to face Saturday.

The look-ahead to Michigan - is it a problem?  If the Bucks were facing a team like (say) Iowa, it would be a concern, but not against Indiana.  Bucks roll (and cover) Saturday.  The Call: Ohio State 49 Indiana 10

CD102.5's Brian Phillips Answers Colin's Questions About Pulp.

This month's installment of Reelin' and Rockin' at the Gateway Film Center features Pulp - A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets. Drinks at the upstairs bar at 7 pm and movie at 8 pm. Tiks only 5$ and proceeds to CD1025 for the kids. Colin knows this is an important event but really doesn't know why. Brian was nice enough to fill him in.

Colin - I know I should know Pulp but really other than the one guy is named Jarvis, I can't say I can name a song offhand. Does this make me a total dumbass or is in natural for us Yanks to have trouble keeping track of all these UK bands?

Brian- Not at all. It's tough to break into the U.S. market. Look at Pulp the way you would The Kinks or Blur. Their Britishness makes large scale success in America a more difficult proposition.

Colin: What record would be the best one for a novice like myself to start with?

1995's "Different Class" has their best known song "Common People" and is generally regarded as their greatest top to bottom. It garnered the 1996 Mercury Prize for England's best album and sold a million and a quarter copies in their native land alone. That's like moving around seven million copies here. If you need more convincing William Shatner covered "Common People" several years ago and it's hilarious!

Colin: Have you ever seen them live? Have they done a big room appearance at CD1025?

Brian- I have not. America was never a touring priority and jaunts of any length have been sadly few and far between.

Colin; This movie is brand new and making it's Columbus debut at our little movie club. Any initial word on reviews?

Brian- Reviews have been across the board very positive. I've read that their home town of Sheffield is an important part of the film. The "Common People" that live and work there are reportedly instrumental in the film's success.

If I could I'd like to add a recommendation. Front man Jarvis Cocker's (no relation to fellow Sheffield native Joe Cocker) 2009 solo album "Further Complications" is for my money the funniest album ever recorded about being a recently divorced sexually frustrated middle-aged man. It is an excellent display of his lacerating wit. It also rocks like a mother.

Winter's Coming But It's Really Not A Big Deal For You by Wal Ozello

Did you see the Minnesota v Ohio State football game?  Hear the stories about the the snow that needed to be shoveled out of the stadium?

Maybe you're from Cleveland, where you've already got snow dumped on you in buckets and realized that everyone forgot how to drive in this weather.

Maybe you're getting ready for ski season... joining the school's ski club... waxing up your snowboard.

I'm going to spend the day switching out my lawnmower and snowblower in my garage. Winterizing the lawnmower, and making sure the snowblower starts. I'll get all my winter gear together, too.  God forbid if we get a couple inches this week, I'll have to do my driveway and a couple of neighbors' as well.

It's getting cold, folks. It's time to put in the storm windows, reset the thermostats, and get out the winter pajamas. Get the ice melt out, snow shovels on hand, and prepare for snow, ice, cold, snow, ice, cold, and some more snow, ice, and cold.

But here's the thing.... I don't have it that bad and my guess is neither do you. I got a roof over my head, windows I can close, and doors I can shut. Some people don't have that. They may have a tent, an alley way, or a highway bridge.  Their heating source may be a heat exhaust from a downtown building. Some others may have a house to live in, but can't afford the heating bills or even extra blankets for their kids.

Keep these people in your thoughts and prayers as the days grow shorter and colder. I'll be giving some real thanks this year during the last Thursday in November. I have a house, a job, and health insurance. That's a lot more than some other people.

And if you can find it in your heart to help, I recommend donating to a homeless shelter whether in money, blankets, or food.
