In Memoriam: Andrew Ranken

Andrew “The Clobberer” Ranken, the definitive drummer for The Pogues, has passed away at 72 from unknown causes.

Ranken joined The Pogues shortly after their formation in 1983 and played on each of their seven albums. He was behind the kit until sidelined by health issues in 2024.

Andrew Ranken kept a furious beat behind the chaos, and was a huge part of The Pogues’ unique London-Irish punk sound. I’m grateful to have seen him play several times, and if there is such a place, I’m sure he’s setting up somewhere in the corner of a pub with Shane MacGowan and Phil Chevron for a pint and some music.

RIP Clobberer.
